Toughness and hamiltonicity in k-trees

چکیده
We consider toughness conditions that guarantee the existence of a hamiltonian cycle in ktrees, a subclass of the class of chordal graphs. By a result of Chen et al. 18-tough chordal graphs are hamiltonian, and by a result of Bauer et al. there exist nontraceable chordal graphs with toughness arbitrarily close to 4 . It is believed that the best possible value of the toughness guaranteeing hamiltonicity of chordal graphs is less than 18, but the proof of Chen et al. indicates that proving a better result could be very complicated. We show that every 1-tough 2-tree on at least three vertices is hamiltonian, a best possible result since 1toughness is a necessary condition for hamiltonicity. We generalize the result to k-trees for k ≥ 2: Let G be a k-tree. If G has toughness at least k+1 3 , then G is hamiltonian. Moreover, we present infinite classes of nonhamiltonian 1-tough k-trees for each k ≥ 3.

Bounds on the Maximum Number of Edge-disjoint Steiner Trees of a Graph
Tutte and Nash-Williams, independently, gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a connected graph to have at least t edgedisjoint spanning trees. Gusfield introduced the concept of edgetoughness η(G) of a connected graph G, defined as the minimum |S|/(ω(G − S) − 1) taken over all edge-disconnecting sets S of G, where ω(G−S) is the number of connected components of G−S. If a graph has edge-...
متن کاملOn Toughness and Hamiltonicity of 2K2-Free Graphs
The toughness of a (non-complete) graph G is the minimum value of t for which there is a vertex cut A whose removal yields |A|/t components. Determining toughness is an NP-hard problem for general input graphs. The toughness conjecture of Chvátal, which states that there exists a constant t such that every graph on at least 3 vertices with toughness at least t is hamiltonian, is still open for ...
متن کاملRecent research in Graph Theory
A well-known and fundamental property of graphs is Hamiltonicity. A connected graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle. Determining if a graph is Hamiltonian is known as a NP-complete problem and no satisfactory characterization exists. Nevertheless, many sufficient conditions for Hamiltonicity were found, usually expressed in terms of degree, connectivity, density, toughness, indep...

This research work presents the study on fracture behavior of Al6061 with graphite particulate composite produced by the stir casting technique. The materials selected for the proposed work is Al6061 and graphite particles. Compact tension (CT) specimens were utilized to determine fracture toughness for different thickness of composite. In the present work, optimizing the parameters of the comp...
متن کاملQuasi-Hamiltonicity: A Series of Necessary Conditions for a Digraph to Be Hamiltonian
We introduce new necessary conditions, k-quasi-hamiltonicity (0 k n ? 1), for a digraph of order n to be hamiltonian. Every (k + 1)-quasi-hamiltonian digraph is also k-quasi-hamiltonian; we construct digraphs which are k-quasi-hamiltonian, but not (k + 1)-quasi-hamiltonian. We design an algorithm that checks k-quasi-hamiltonicity of a given digraph with n vertices and m arcs in time O(nm k). We...
